Карп, поднявшись против течения через девять порогов, способен стать драконом.
Просто дополнила и слегка переделала старый доклад - учительница теперь другая. Сестре понравилось и она потребовала выложить. Опечаток, по-моему, нет)
Hijikata Toshizo was born at the 5th of May, 1835. His father died several months before he was born. Five years later his mother passed away. After then Hijikata lived with his elder brother until the age of 11.
As a younger brother, Toshizo himself could inherit nothing. So around 1845 his brother got him a job at a shop. Unfortunately these plans had been made without reckoning with Tohizo himself. Soon after being brought to the shop he ran away to his sister’s house.
In 1851 he got another job at a shop. Because of his good looks, he was made to sit near the storefront to attract customers. However this job did not last long either because he was caught messing around with a female co-worker and fired.
Toshizo began to peddle the medicines made by his family. Also on trips he could take lessons at dojo he stopped. In this way he could earn money and still pursue his true interest. He learned in many dojos so he wasn’t good in some style of kenjutsu but his own style was rather strong. He continued to do this until formally enrolling in the Shieikan in 1859. There Toshizo first got to know Kondo Isami. They became friends.
One day Kondo and Hijikata heard that nearby formed Roshingumi - a squad from the samurais to protect the shogunate. They join Roshingumi with Kondo’s friends and pupils.
Roshingumi was in fact an Emperor squad but Hijikata, Kondo and some people wanted to serve shogun. So they leaved Roshingumi and establish a new squad, Shinsengumi.
Hijikata helped Kondo to form the Shinsengumi. He was a vice-commander in Shinsengumi and was responsible for discipline. He did much for the squad. For example, he formulated the Shinsengumi’s code and invented the Hiratsuki stile of kenjutsu. Also – this is important – he made the Shinsengumi members to eat pork. He specially wrote to a European doctor and asked him about benefit of meat. Thing is that meat was rare and expensive.
Thanks to Toshizo Shinsengumi became a secret police of shogunate. In this squad people were teached to fight in groups. It was new and more effective for street battles then to fight face to face.
Hijikata was killed by a bullet in the last fight of Boshin’s wars, at the 11th of May, 1869. It was after Kondo’s execution and his death was the end of the Shinsengumi. It’s unknown where he was buried.
Hijikata Toshizo was an amazing person. A youngest peasant’s son, he achieved a right in surname, two swords and silk clothes. His surname was invented by himself and can be read as “noble man”, in other words - samurai, as “peasant” or as “hooligan”.
According to contemporaries Toshizo was laconic, very calm and practical, he laugh rarely. He was genial tactician. Because of his cruel nature he has a nickname “oni-fukucho” what means “demonic vice-commander”. But his subordinates didn’t consider his methods too firm or cruel. Besides that he wrote poems and compose a book of haiku (Japanese tiercet). Also known that his favorite dish was takuwan (a medley of salted slices of radish and garden radish)
Now Hijikata Toshizo is the national hero of Japan together with Kondo Isami and other Shinsengumi members.
